1920s Jazz Age : Fashion & Photographs

03:51
America in the 1920s created a cultural shockwave that reverberated around the world, creating icons on an industrial scale— from stars of the silver screen to skyscrapers. Emancipation, combined with burgeoning affluence, offered women the chance to adopt a completely new way of dressing, from sports to evening wear. This show at the American Museum in Britain features over 100 fashion objects, including flapper dresses, evening capes, lame coats, couture, and ready-to-wear garments from 1919 to 1929. A decade of change is documented through the shifting hemlines and waistlines of the era’s fashions. The exhibition also includes the work of photographer James Abbé, whose portraits present a candid commentary on early twentieth-century celebrity. 1920s Jazz Age : Fashion & Photographs is on display from 18 March – 29 October 2017

All That Jazz: How fashion helped liberate women in the 1920s - BBC News

01:40
The Jazz Age was the period in the 1920s, in which jazz music and dance became popular. It also had its own distinct look. Dennis Nothdruft is curator of "1920s Jazz Age Fashion and Photographs", an exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. He told Dan Damon how fashion in the 1920s reflected the dizzying social change and helped liberate women. Vintage 1920's Women Fashion with Current Version / Jazz Age

02:25
Women's fashions of the 1920s were typified by * Less tailoring leading to an abandonment of the corset * A tubular silhouette erased the typical feminine shape * Dropped waistlines created a long, slim figure * Shorter hemlines made it easier to drive cars and move quickly Women's fashions of the 1920s are a large part of the Jazz Age identity. New technology and the end of the horrors brought about by World War I and the 1918 Flu Pandemic gave rise to a youthful exuberance personified by the Flapper. Contrary to popular misconception, the short skirts and bold make up of the flapper did not rule the fashion of the day but were an iconic and memorable look. Fashion periods are usually distinguished by the female silhouette which presented a boyish figure with flattened breasts and loose clothing for most of the decade. The drop waist shift dresses of the 1920s relieved women of the last vestiges of Edwardian formality. Less tailoring, as well as the availability of the sewing machine meant that women could easily make fashionable clothing at home so that high fashion was no longer restricted to the elite. Women felt empowered when they won the right to vote (1920 in the US, 1928 for 21 year old women in Britain). The widespread use of the automobile, radio, and increased educational opportunities encouraged young women to cut off their hair and kick up their heels. Breaking News - New photos highlight the glitz of the Jazz Age in America

03:06
An incredible set of newly released pictures give a glimpse of the glitz and glamour of the Jazz Age in America, back in the 1920s.The photos, taken almost a century ago at the height of the Jazz Age, show some of the top fashion choices of the era. High-profile women from the time are shown adorning extravagant frocks and head pieces to show off their status. On the men's side, the 'Saville Row' look popular with the gents of the time, centering around three-piece suits and top hats, is also showcased in the images, which have been published in a new book, Martin Pel's 1920s Jazz Age Fashion and Photographers. The latest offering from Pel, author and curator of costumes and textiles at Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton, takes an in-depth look at some of the cutting-edge fashions that defined the decade. It was around the Jazz Age, a period captured by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel The Great Gatsby, that women received the right to vote, while prohibition was introduced and America adjusted to its new role as a major international player. And, Pel says, the fashion of the time reflected the uniqueness of that particular moment in history.'This publication coincides with the exhibition 1920s Jazz Age Fashion & Photographs at London's Fashion and Textiles Museum and explores the jazz age through fashion clothing, accessories and photography of the age, notably by James Abbe, as evidence to explore multiple narratives,' Pel said.'The book explores the period 1919-29 from the evolution of what was to become known as the flapper or la garçonne look, culminating in a return to femininity in female fashion as the world sought stability in the face of economic uncertainty.'Jazz became the world's first youth movement—combining and celebrating music, fashion and youth—and was the first American and black culture to have a truly international influence.'Jazz, Pel said, represented a 'break from the past', 'from the generation that had taken the world to war, and from old modes of behavior and thought'.'Jazz embraced the new and the unconventional, and harnessed the unbridled energy of youth in its multitude of expressions,' he added.'Jazz was democratic, and inclusive, embracing the formerly silent voices of not only blacks, but also women, homosexuals and Jews. Transcending its musical origins, jazz became a term that was applied to all manner of objects influencing their design and decoration—not least of all fashion, which displayed jazz's aesthetic and attitude from couture to the department store.'
